It's official. On September 9 we announced that the School of Comics, the creativespace, art school and indie comic shop that shares a building with Laguna Studios at 4914 NW Loop 410, is now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Who cheered? A lot of you, it turns out: more than 2,200 likes and a comment section full of people asking what they could donate.
Not bad for a space that only opened its doors in April.
What we are
If you haven't been by yet: we're a creativespace, art school, indie comic store and third space rolled into one. Founded by a punk artist, backed by a team of queer, neurodivergent and alternative artists. A nonprofit community for artists of all kinds.
- A creativespace where $15 gets you supplies and equipment for the entire day
- Comics and merch from exclusively local and independent artists
- Workshops and comic classes
- Events for the creatives and alternatives of San Antonio, from Coven Craft Night to horror movie nights
What changes now that we're a nonprofit
The mission doesn't change. The way you can back it does.
Donations go toward paying staff (and eventually hiring more), equipment, supplies, and throwing events for the community. You proved the point fast: our September fundraiser blew past its $350 goal, then $750, then $1,000. That covered our booth at Big Texas Comicon and will help with travel to a second convention we've been invited to, Tip O' Texas in South Padre.
The fundraiser is still open. And a big thank you to The Table Consulting for helping us get here.

We're now closed Mondays and open Sundays, with an extra hour on weekends and a later close on weekdays.
