How to Fulfill a Kickstarter Campaign: A Creator's Step-by-Step Guide

by Laguna Studios on Jul 27, 2026
Laguna Studios β€” official Kickstarter Expert Partner badge

You funded. Confetti cannon, comment-section victory lap, that one backer who came in at the top tier on day one. Now comes the part of the campaign nobody makes a launch video for: getting hundreds of boxes of rewards from a printer to backers on five continents without losing your margin β€” or your mind.

We've fulfilled 150+ crowdfunding campaigns and shipped 350,000+ products at Laguna Studios, both as an official Kickstarter Expert Partner and as creators who've launched campaigns of our own. Here's how to fulfill a Kickstarter campaign, step by step β€” the version we wish someone had handed us before our first one.

Step 1: Price your fulfillment before you launch

The most expensive fulfillment mistakes happen months before a single box ships. Shipping quoted by vibes during the campaign is how creators end up paying backers for the privilege of sending them books. Before launch: build one physical mock-up of each reward tier, weigh it boxed, and price it against real postage tables β€” domestic and the international zones your backers actually live in. Better yet, charge shipping in the pledge manager after the campaign, when you know exactly who's ordering what and where it's going.

Step 2: Design reward tiers you can actually pack

Every SKU you add multiplies your packing combinations. A $25 β€œjust the book” tier packs itself; the $85 tier with three variant covers, two enamel pins, a bookplate, and a choose-your-own sticker does not. Keep tiers to combinations a human can pull without a flowchart, and put the chaos in add-ons instead β€” add-ons get itemized on a packing slip, stretch-goal spaghetti doesn't. (Our hand kitting team builds every tier by hand. We've seen what a fourteen-SKU tier does to a timeline.)

Step 3: Survey early, lock addresses late

Send your backer survey while the campaign high is still fresh β€” response rates fall off a cliff after week two. But lock addresses as late as you responsibly can, right before your rewards ship. Backers move. A surprising number of them move without telling you, then ask where their book went.

Step 4: Get the print run to the warehouse in one piece

If you're printing overseas, freight time is measured in weeks and customs adds suspense you didn't order. Ship directly from your printer to your fulfillment partner, and make sure whoever receives it counts the cartons and flags damage at the dock β€” not three weeks later when the first backer opens a crushed corner. When your books land with us, that count happens the day they arrive into our warehouse.

Step 5: Kit, pack, and ship like the books matter

This is the whole game for comics and books: rigid packing so #1 arrives looking like #1, kitting that matches the right variant to the right backer, and postage picked to protect your margins β€” including Media Mail where your books qualify (and not where they don't; the rules have teeth). This is exactly what our comics fulfillment operation is built around.

Step 6: Communicate while the boxes fly

A backer with a tracking number is a happy backer. A backer in an information vacuum is a comment section problem. Post an update when rewards start shipping, when each wave goes out, and when something slips β€” especially when something slips. Honesty buys you patience; silence spends it.

Step 7: Plan for the bounce-backs

Some packages come back β€” bad addresses, missed pickups, that backer who moved. Decide before launch who pays reshipping and how backers request one, and have a return management process so bounce-backs get handled instead of piling up in a corner.

Or: hand it to people who do this every day

All of the above is doable from a garage. We know because we did it β€” once. If you'd rather spend post-campaign season making your next thing, that's our cue: our crowdfunding fulfillment team takes it from freight to front doors.
