What Is a 3PL, and When Should a Creator Use One?

by Laguna Studios on Jul 27, 2026
Packed, organized shelves inside the Laguna Studios fulfillment warehouse

3PL stands for third-party logistics: a company that stores your inventory, then picks, packs, and ships your orders so you don't have to. That's the textbook answer. The creator answer is simpler β€” a 3PL is what stands between you and a living room full of boxes the week your campaign delivers.

We run a comics 3PL at Laguna Studios (alongside publishing our own books), so consider this the plain-English guide we give creators who ask us what it is we actually do all day.

What a 3PL actually does

  • Receiving. Your print run or product shipment arrives at the warehouse; the 3PL counts it, checks for damage, and logs it into inventory.
  • Storage. Your stock lives on organized shelves β€” in our case, clean and secure warehousing in San Antonio β€” instead of your hallway.
  • Pick & pack. An order comes in (a store sale, a backer reward, a subscription), and a human pulls the right items and packs them to survive the trip.
  • Shipping. The 3PL buys postage, picks sensible carriers and services, and gets tracking back to you and your customer.
  • Returns. Bounce-backs and exchanges get processed instead of accumulating β€” see return management.

Good creator-focused 3PLs also handle kitting and assembly (building multi-item reward tiers or subscription boxes by hand) and sync directly with your Shopify store so orders flow in without you touching them.

The signs you've outgrown DIY shipping

Fulfilling your own orders is the right call at the start β€” it's free, you control everything, and volume is small. Here's when that math flips:

  • Your campaign funded bigger than your apartment. A few hundred backers is a weekend. A thousand backers with variant covers is a part-time job with a deadline and a comment section.
  • Orders keep arriving while you're making the next book. Every hour spent in the postage-label mines is an hour not spent creating the thing people are ordering.
  • Convention season and store orders collide. You can't pack orders from a booth in another city.
  • International shipping stopped being fun. Customs forms, zone pricing, and returned-to-sender mysteries are exactly the chores a 3PL eats for breakfast.

What a 3PL costs (and how to read a rate sheet)

Most 3PLs β€” us included β€” price the same few things: receiving your inventory, monthly storage, a per-order pick-and-pack fee, packing materials, and postage at or near carrier rates. The number that matters is the total cost to get one typical order out the door, not any single line item. We publish our fulfillment rates so you can run that math without booking a sales call.

What to look for in a creator's 3PL

Any warehouse can ship a t-shirt. Books and comics are less forgiving: they need rigid packing, condition-aware handling, and people who understand that a dinged corner on a signed variant is not β€œwithin tolerance,” it's a refund. That's the difference between a generic warehouse and a comics fulfillment operation run by people who publish comics themselves. If your work is crowdfunded, look for a partner who's done it at volume β€” we're an official Kickstarter Expert Partner with 150+ campaigns fulfilled and 350,000+ products shipped.

So… do you need one?

If you're shipping a handful of orders a week and enjoying it, no β€” keep your money. If shipping is eating your creative time, your storage space, or your sanity, it's cheaper than it looks to hand it off. Tell us what you make and what's coming, and we'll tell you honestly whether you're ready for a 3PL β€” even if the answer is β€œnot yet.”
