A few months ago we opened the doors on the School of Comics, the art studio, makerspace and indie comics shop that shares a building with Laguna Studios at 4914 NW Loop 410. It has been a loud, busy August. Here's what happened, what's coming in September, and a couple of new things that make it easier to hang out with us.
The big one: Smiling Bear Tattoos grand opening, September 5
Our sibling tattoo studio inside the School of Comics, Smiling Bear Tattoos by Gerry Garcia, is officially opening on Saturday, September 5, 5β10 PM, and entry is free. Nine tattoo artists doing flash designs, a 90s-themed art show with 20 artists, vendors, and DJ Deathwish on the decks. Bring money if you want art, goodies or ink; otherwise just bring yourself and a friend.
Every month, on the calendar
Two things have settled into a rhythm, and both are cheap.
Live figure drawing, last Friday of the month. No instruction, live models, two hours of drawing with a room full of other artists. Hosted by our event coordinator and general manager, @avocado__papi. $20, $15 with a student ID, 18+ because the models are nude. August's session went ahead through a proper Texas storm and the room still filled up, which tells you something about this crowd. Next one: September 25.
Mindfulness Through Art, first Sunday of the month. Kai from Doodlehaus runs this one: a prompt, time to doodle, and a no-pressure conversation afterward. It's built for anyone stuck on perfectionism or creative block, and the people who've taken it keep coming back. September 6, 4β5 PM, $20. This is the third run.

- September 11: Parallel Play Projects Night. Bring whatever you're working on and work on it next to other people doing the same.
- September 13: Chill 'N' Craft Night, with a supply drive. Bring art supplies you don't use anymore and they'll find a home.
- September 18: Slasher Movie Night. Yes, this is the start of the Halloween run.
New: day-pass bundles
The $15 day pass is still the easiest way to use the studio, the supplies and the equipment without a membership. Now you can buy them in bundles: 4 passes for $54 or 8 for $102, which works out to 10β15% off. It's a punch card, so there's no expiry pressure, and you can hand one to a friend as a gift.
Small stuff worth knowing
- New flyers are up around town, designed by @deadaliveguy. If you see the black cat, that's us.
- The 3D printer is out of commission through September 6. It isn't broken; it'll be back the following week.
- Vendors and artists: we're building a database for upcoming events, including the Halloween ones. Handmade crafts, punk artists, indie comic creators, horror artists. Sign up through the link in the Instagram bio and you'll be first to hear.
